Annual Memorial Day Service
10 a.m. Monday, May 29, 2017
at The Avenue of Flags in Sylvan Heights Cemetery
The Stephen R. Haky Funeral Home Inc. and Sylvan Heights Cemetery are proud to host the annual Memorial Day Service at 10 a.m. Monday, May 29, 2017. The public is encouraged to attend this special event, and refreshments will be provided.
Memorial Day Ceremonies proves that the bond formed in military service spans generations. Memorial Day was officially proclaimed on May 5, 1868 by General John Logan, National Commander of the Grand Army of the Republic. It was first observed on May 30, 1868, when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery.
The tradition of decorating the graves of America’s war veterans, known now as Memorial Day, dates back more than 200 years and continues to bring veterans and families together in Uniontown.
